BREAKING NEWS: Cyclone upgraded to Tropical Depression 22W; storm tracking to hit Tinian, for now

By Barbara Brown

(Tumon, Guam) The Joint Typhoon Warning Center has upgraded Invest 97W to Tropical Depression 22W. Kandit has been following the storm's development the past four days, when the weather disturbance was more than 2,000 miles east-southeast of Guam and making its way past the Marshall Islands.

Tropical Depression 22W now 838 miles east-southeast of Guam, increasing in strength over the past few hours from maximum sustained winds of 26 mph to 34 mph. It is expected to become a tropical storm within the next 24 hours and make its way toward the Mariana Islands through Monday or Tuesday, according to information from the JTWC.

The storm is moving toward us at 18.5 mph.

According to the current track and forecast, TD 22W's center will pass directly over Tinian. The entire chain of the Mariana archipelago, however, is within the track, making it possible for the center of the storm to veer south to Guam, or north to the other islands.
