(Tumon, Guam) A 41-year-old male sailor sick with the Coronavirus succumbed to the disease Monday at 3 p.m. (ChST) at Naval Hospital Guam, according to Kandit News sources.
The U.S. Navy moments ago confirmed the death.
The sailor was part of the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier, and is the first known casualty of the Coronavirus, who was an active duty servicemember.
"The Sailor tested positive for COVID-19 March 30, was removed from the ship and placed in an isolation house on Naval Base Guam with four other USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Sailors," according to the Navy statement. "At approximately 8:30 a.m., April 9 (local time), the Sailor was found unresponsive during a daily medical check. While Naval Base Guam emergency responders were notified, CPR was administered by fellow Sailors and onsite medical team in the house. The Sailor was transferred to U.S. Naval Hospital Guam, where the Sailor was moved to the Intensive Care Unit. The Sailor was declared deceased April 13.
The sailor's wife, who also is on active duty with the Navy, was flown in to Guam this past weekend due to her husband's condition, according to Kandit sources.
Hospital staff, according to sources, lined the hall of the hospital and tearfully bid farewell to the Sailor in a highly emotional moment for the Naval Hospital Guam following the Sailor's passing.
Kandit sends its heartfelt condolences and prayers to this man's family and friends, and to all his fellow Sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
