Democratic Party of Guam chairwoman Sarah Thomas Nededog said her party wishes Superior Court of Guam Judge Maria Cenzon well as she approaches the U.S. Senate confirmation process. President Trump appointed Ms. Cenzon to be the next chief judge of the U.S. District Court of Guam.
Her appointment must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before January. If confirmed, Ms. Cenzon will replace Frances Tydingco-Gatewood. Her seat on the local bench will then be available for gubernatorial appointment.
“The Democratic Party of Guam recognizes Judge Maria Cenzon for this presidential nomination and congratulates her and her family for this honor. Judge Cenzon is a daughter of Guam and, at this point, is the one nominated by the President which will go through the confirmation process in the US Senate confirmation. The Republican Party of Guam also released a statement in support of Ms. Cenzon's appointment. Kandit previously reported this.
The bipartisan expressions of support have been joined by Republican senators Telo Taitague and Jim Moylan, and Democratic senator Jose "Pedo" Terlaje. Other Democratic senators, including Speaker Tina Muna Barnes, are expected to make statements as well.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero also has weighed into the process of Ms. Cenzon's appointment, explaining that she was not consulted by the President or his office on her selection. Governors traditionally have nominated prospects for presidential appointment to the federal bench on Guam.
