DOC officer falls to COVID-19

Corrections Officer Glenn Martinez

By Troy Torres

As the seaport family was preparing their tribute to a Port Authority employee, who died from COVID-19, the Department of Corrections family was learning that one of their own, Corrections Officer Glenn Martinez, had died after contracting the disease.

Mr. Martinez, a 23-year veteran of the DOC, died last night. DOC management is planning a tribute, including a 21-gun salute, in his honor.

"We are deeply saddened," DOC deputy director Bob Camacho said. "A very dedicated, hardworking and honorable officer."

Mr. Camacho could not comment on Martinez's medical conditions, because of privacy laws, but did confirm the officer was in isolation.

COVID-19 has spread rapidly throughout the prison's Mangilao facility, with hundreds of inmates and detainees, and scores of employees testing positive over the past two months.

The prison's management will appear before Sen. Jose "Pedo" Terlaje's oversight committee to answer questions about the situation there.

Port mourning death of employee

Port employee Henry San Nicolas

This morning, the 'Port Strong' family held an outdoor tribute prior to the start of the work day for their employee who died from COVID-19, Henry San Nicolas. Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero, Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio, and Sen. Mary Torres, who was general manager of the Port Authority of Guam before she was a senator, joined hundreds of port employees to memorialize Mr. San Nicolas. His family, who often wept during the tribute, was showered with gifts and well wishes from Mr. San Nicolas's co-workers.
