Guam may not pay child tax credit on time

By Nancy I. Maanao

When Congressman Michael San Nicolas Monday announced the July 15 roll out of monthly Child Tax Credit payments between $250 to $300 per child per taxpayer, a sigh of relief was let out by hundreds of Kandit viewers, who have been asking about the implementation. Indeed, throughout the country, the roll out will begin July 15. Except Guam may not be ready by that time.

The following is a brief conversation Kandit had with director of revenue and taxation Dafne Shimizu today:

Kandit: Will the child tax credit be paid on Guam the same time as the rest of the country?

Ms. Shimizu: We are working with the IRS on the implementation plan for Guam residents. Once that is complete we will have more information on the roll out for Guam.

Kandit: So no definite date as of now, then?

Ms. Shimizu: Not at this time.

Under President Biden’s federal relief package, the Child Tax Credit will be advanced through monthly payments to qualified taxpayers.

"In just a few days the country will be rolling out the enhanced Child Tax Credit secured in the American Rescue Plan,” Mr. San Nicolas explained in his speech. “From July 15 to the end of the year every single family earning up to $150,000 for a couple or $112,000 as a single parent will receive $250 EVERY MONTH per child between the ages of 6 and 17, and $300 EVERY MONTH per child 6 years and below. If you filed taxes for 2019 or 2020, or if you received a stimulus check you should be automatically included, and DRT should be establishing a process for those who are non-filers." - Congressman San Nicolas

Kandit will follow up with DRT over the next few weeks on their progress.
