Valid environmental and cultural concerns have been raised.
Some senators have raised the issue of the serienthes nelsonii, an endangered species endemic to Guam. One tree was found within the construction area of the new live fire training buffer zone at Andersen Air Force Base. Senators have not, however, discussed the government of Guam's failure to do anything to replant the tree until former Joint Region Commander Rear Admiral Shoshanna Chatfield informed the governor of the military's substantial efforts to save the tree.
