NEWS: 5 GMH workers have COVID-19; man in his 80s dies; governor allows TR sailors into Guam hotels

By Johnnie Rosario

(Tumon, Guam) A COVID-19 male patient in his 80s has died. Five Guam Memorial Hospital employees have tested positive for the virus (this is part of the current count of 69 COVID-19 positive patients). Governor Lou Leon Guerrero is allowing sailors testing negative for COVID-19 to quarantine at hotels in Guam.

These were the main points of the news conference Ms. Leon Guerrero held together with Joint Region Marianas commander Rear Admiral John Menoni, Guam state epidemiologist Ann Pobutsky, and other government officials.

Of the five GMH workers who tested positive, one is in isolation at GMH. The other four are in home isolation, according to GMH administrator Lillian Perez-Posadas.

Ms. Leon Guerrero said that the sailors who will be allowed to stay in Guam hotels will not be allowed outside the hotels, to include the beach. She said the military will be guarding the common areas and hallways of each floor to ensure sailors are abiding by the quarantine standards enforceable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

These same standards are not being applied to the Guam hotel quarantine currently happening for travelers to Guam. According to Dave Sablan, who is in quarantine at the Pacific Star Hotel, government officials have not been guarding the floors to ensure people in quarantine are not visiting others in their hotel rooms.

Mr. Sablan became more concerned about this fact after learning that someone in the facility tested positive for COVID-19 Monday.
