NEWS: Customs & Coast Guard investigating Matson employee

By Troy Torres

(Tumon, Guam) A Matson employee is under local and federal investigation for opening a container prior to a Customs inspection.

"I can confirm that this allegedly occurred," seaport general manager Rory Respicio said. "It's currently under investigation, so I can't comment on the specifics."

The investigation, however, is with Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency, and the U.S. Coast Guard, according to Mr. Respicio.

"In February there was an incident that occurred regarding sealed containers within the Port Authority," Customs spokeswoman Jessi Santos-Torres wrote to Kandit. "The Customs and Quarantine Agency is investigating the incident, therefore, we are unable to release any further information until the investigation is completed."

According to sources, the employee (who has a Transportation Worker Identification Credential card), was caught opening the sealed at the seaport's docks.

Kandit previously reported an analysis into the importation of the drug supply into the island. We presented information that the vast majority of the supply comes through shipping containers.

"The Customs and Quarantine Agency is dedicated to enforcing all federal and local laws to ensure the safety of our island community," Ms. Santos-Torres said. "This incident is no exception."
