NEWS: San Nicolas urges governor to seek out federal unemployment aid for Guam workers

By Jacob Nakamura

(Tumon, Guam) Financial relief for Guam's recently-unemployed and displaced by COVID-19-induced economic downward spiral may be available if Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero will seek it out.

That's the message Congressman Michael San Nicolas gave to her in a letter to Ms. Leon Guerrero last week (read below).

With the declaration of a Federal Emergency by President Trump regarding the impact of the coronavirus on public health and safety, Mr. San Nicolas is urging Ms. Leon Guerrero to seek out Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) for Guam's impacted workforce.

"The Stafford Act that is triggered with a Federal Emergency Declaration opens up access to federal funds for workers who are unemployed due to a disaster," Congressman San Nicolas opened. "With the Congress recently categorizing the coronavirus as an official disaster, our workers who are losing their jobs due to the economic impact the pandemic has had on Guam tourism can get federal relief," Congressman San Nicolas added. "We must act swiftly to put these options into action so as to mitigate impacts across the board before they cause further harm due to bureaucratic delay," Congressman San Nicolas concludes.

In a letter to Ms. Leon Guerrero, Mr. San Nicolas apprises her of the DUA availability and local points of contact.
