Senators unanimously pass bill extending building permits up to 12 months

The following is a news release from the Office of Speaker Therese Terlaje:

Bill No. 46-36 (COR) sponsored by Speaker Therese Terlaje and Senators Jose “Pedo” Terlaje, Telena Cruz Nelson, Christopher M. Dueñas, and Joe S. San Agustin was passed with unanimous support from the Legislature.

Under current law, a building permit lapses and is voided if work authorized is not commenced within 3 months after its issuance and may only be allowed an extension for a maximum of 3 months by DPW. Bill No. 46-36 would allow for the extension of a building permit for a period up to 12 months before a building permit lapses and is voided.

“We must give homeowners and potential homeowners looking to make improvements on their properties more flexibility and assistance when they face unforeseen delays during construction. This bill is one step towards improving our permitting process,” stated Speaker Terlaje.
