Storm intensifying quickly, moving closer to Marianas

By Barbara Brown

(Tumon, Guam) Invest 93W now is about 200 nautical miles closer to Guam than it was yesterday, and it is forming rapidly into a tropical depression. The storm, which has not matured enough yet to be given a name, was 1,080 nautical miles east of Guam, moving along a west-northwest track at about 13.8 miles per hour as of a couple hours ago, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

93W will consolidate and strengthen as it moves westward, global models agree. "There is high potential for rapid intensification," according to the JTWC in a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert just issued. "The potential for development of a significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours is high," the meteorological forecast and alert continues.
