Storm Watch: Scattered showers, thunderstorms, and wet roads today

By Barbara Brown

(Tumon, Guam) Not a good idea to do yard work or wash your cars today. Got pets? Make sure they're inside or tied to something strong, because thunder and lightning can disorient them, they will flee, and they won't know how to get home.

Civil Defense sent us the following weather notice:

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a short-term forecast for Guam and Guam coastal waters.

Through 2:30 p.m., scattered showers and thunderstorms will bring locally heavy rain and occasional cloud-to-ground lightning to Guam and Guam and Rota coastal waters. Up to an inch of rain is possible in heaviest showers. Be alert for low visibilities in heavy rain and ponding of water on the road. Seek shelter if lightning is seen or thunder is heard. Boaters should seek shelter below decks if lightning occurs.

A thunderstorm advisory is in effect for the Guam International Airport until 3 p.m. this afternoon. Thunderstorms are possible or occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to practice extreme caution while traveling in these rainy conditions, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.
