They’re back. Tourism restarts on Guam

Around 1,400 tourists from Taiwan visited Guam in February 2020, the month before the public health emergency started. More than 2,100 are expected to visit this month, as Guam reopens her doors and as a packed charter flight arrived today at the Guam international airport.

“The ray of sunshine that peaked through the dark clouds of almost a year and a half has now landed terra firma,” said Guam Visitors Bureau general manager Carl Gutierrez. “This gives our people hope that indeed the worst is behind us. Tourists walking the Pleasure Island promenade will be so visible that businesses will now open up and our people will be back to work. Thank you to the many professionals at GVB. They deserve all the credit along with GHRA and industry people.”

The former Governor said it is possible additional charter flights may be added at the end of July, increasing the anticipated travel numbers.

Tourism generally, and during normal times, accounts for more than 60 percent of economic activity, and tens of thousands of jobs.
