Typhoon Watch in effect for NMI; Tropical Storm Watch for Guam



(Tumon, Guam) Tropical Depression 22W is strengthening and moving closer to the Marianas.

The center of the storm as of 1 pm (ChST) was located 785 miles east-southeast of Guam. It is moving west-northwest at 18 mph toward the Marianas.


The Mariana archipelago is within the track of the storm, however it currently is forecast to pass south of Saipan, perhaps Monday or Tuesday.


It currently has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, according to the National Weather Service, and is expected to reach tropical storm strength today or early tomorrow, according to information from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

A Typhoon Watch is now in effect for Saipan, Tinian and Rota. This means damaging winds of 39 mph or more *are possible* Monday, and typhoon force winds of 74 mph or greater *are possible* Monday night or Tuesday morning. A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect for Guam. This means damaging winds of 39 mph or higher *are possible* Monday.
