Unemployment applications online now!

By Eric Rosario

The unemployment system Congressman Michael San Nicolas first brought to the island's attention in mid-March has finally been activated to receive applications.

The Guam Department of Labor will not be ready to disburse payments at this time, though the application system now is online at www.hireguam.com.

Unemployment benefits related to the national public health emergency were extended to Guam by Congress on March 27, when President Trump signed the CARES Act into law.

It has taken the Leon Guerrero administration and its Department of Labor director this long to finally open the application process. Tens of thousands of workers have been furloughed since the public health emergency started. Thousands of families have relied on public assistance and charity to feed their hunger during the crisis.
